“A well written pattern with clear explanations for the stitches used. It worked up quickly. I look forward to making more!” – Persinette Beanie, verified Etsy buyer.

Hello!
I’m working the Hayride Shrug. Question on Row 3 of body, when it calls for shell in middle hdc of each shell across, are you saying to shell in the middle space between the previous row shells? I am just befuddled. Can you explain what to do, I’m stuck 😊
Thank you so much!!
Hi Donna, thanks for getting in touch with your question! Each ‘shell’ consists of 3 hdc stitches, the shell in the following row should be placed directly on top, by working it into the middle of the shell below, (i.e. the centre hdc of the group of 3). The shells should appear to all sit on top of the ones directly below. I hope this helps clarify it for you! – Michelle x
I can not find what kind of shell you are talking about, how many hdc in these shels
Why make ehdc, cant we make hdc or dc instead?
Thanks, Leah
Hi Leah, this is the contact page but I’m assuming you’re referring to the Hayride shrug? All of my patterns here on the blog have a complete list of abbreviations and stitches, where you’ll find the information you’re looking for 🙂 Specifically for this pattern, the shell has 3 hdc. Hope that helps! Michelle
I am now on my second attempt at this pattern. I just love the look and love the colors I have chosen. The collar is my favorite part. I am however struggling with the length and fit. I added some rows as the first time I felt like it was too short. Now the length is great but it seems very wide and creates a lot of bulkiness in the back, the sleeves are also quite short, but I could adjust that if I can get the rest worked out. Any tips would be greatly appreciated as I really love the look of it. I was working off the medium size, so I guess I could do the smaller size and still add to the length, if I do this how should I adjust the sleeves? I don’t want to take it apart a third time. thanks!
Hi Joselle! Thanks for reaching out with your question. Because of the construction style, any added length will also add some bulk to the back once the bottom edges are folded up for the sleeves. To make sleeves longer, you’d need to add width also, proportionate to the length, which might help with the look you’re trying to achieve? Don’t forget also that you can add extra ribbing stitches to increase the overall length, and the weight of the fabric itself will make the garment grow as it is worn.
