The Yarn
Firstly, I have to tell you a little about this gorgeous yarn! Furls Wander is a medium worsted, 100% acrylic yarn, available in 52 gorgeous, vibrant colours. It comes in 100g bullet skeins of 120 yards, and has quite simply a beautiful softness and sheen that make it perfect for a cozy crochet shrug.
I will say that with fewer yards per 100g than other brands, this yarn is a little on the heavier side; but this just makes it feel like one big hug when wearing this design! If you want to read more details about the yarn, such as how it works up, my recommended substitutes, and the best hooks to use, head to my full Furls Wander Yarn review!
The Hook
If you’ve seen any of my other patterns, you’ll know that my favourite hooks of all time are Furls Crochet hooks. The Streamline Swirl was the first non-store bought hook I purchased years ago, and I jumped at the chance to try the Alpha Series, a hook I’ve had my eye on for a while. And it did not disappoint! With sustainably sourced wood, these lightweight, handmade hooks are as smooth and lovely to use as they are beautiful!

Hayride Crochet Shrug Pattern Notes:
Pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
Pattern is worked in 3 sections: the Body of the shrug is worked first, then folded and seamed to form the armholes. The Collar is then worked as applied ribbing all the way around the neck opening (first and last rows of the Body), and lastly the sleeve Cuffs are added.
Chain 1 at the beginning of rows does not count as a stitch.
Instructions between asterisks ** are repeated across the row.
Pattern is written first for size XSmall – Small, followed by sizes Medium – Large, XLarge – 2XL, and 3XL – 5XL in parentheses.
In the Body section, odd-numbered rows are the Wrong Side, even-numbered rows are the Right Side.

That is a beautiful shrug!! Great colors for Fall. Thank you!!!
Thank you so much Michelle, I hope you enjoy making it!
Gorgeous! I really like the collar/edging. Always wanted to try a shrug but have been intimidated even though I am an experienced crocheter.
This is very classy!
Thank you, the collar is my favourite part too! I hope you give this a go, and I’m always on hand if you have any questions!

Having trouble doing the collar. Not sure what the pattern is tell me. After I do the chain how that work into the rest of the pattern?
Polly
Hi Polly, the technique for the collar is called applied ribbing. The full PDF available from Ravelry has a photo tutorial of how to do it, otherwise I’m sure there are many videos online that may help you get more of a visual idea. The chain is worked straight up from the neckline, and you work back down the chain towards the neck edge, then working two sts into the neck edge, turn your work and work back out along the chain away from the body, at the end you turn and work back in towards the body again. I hope that helps? Michelle
I am in the process of making this with the exact color you used here with the same yarn brand. I am just right at half way around the trim and am worried that I won’t have enough yarn. I am making the med-large size and got 480 yards of that yarn, which was 4 skeins. At the halfway point I am already part of the way through my 3rd skein. I am thinking for some reason I may need to get more than listed. My main body used pretty much the exact amount used.
Hi Betty, thanks so much for your comment as this could also help others finding themselves in the same position! The gauge and yardage provided is for the pattern in the body of the shrug, but of course our gauges could be slightly different in the collar stitch pattern; this most likely accounts for any difference in yardage for the trim. I hope this helps answer your query! Michelle
I love this shrug pattern, looks so cosy and I’m finding it easy to follow so far. I’m not sure if the yarn I’m using is a little too thin though as I’m finding my piece has body measurements for the XS/S a tad smaller (3-4cm) compared to yours. Does it throw out the pattern if I add 2 more rows to the XS/S (so similar to the M/L instead) to make it slightly longer in length? Thank you!
Hi May, Thank you so much I am glad you are enjoying it! Furls Wander is on the thicker end of the scale for the worsted yarn category so other yarns may come out a little smaller; you absolutely can customize the design that way! You can adjust both the width and the length as you desire, just note that for every two additional rows added you should seam one more stitch along the arms in order to keep the same stitch counts around the sleeve. I hope that makes sense! Michelle
That makes sense, thank you Michelle. As it’s a little too late to adjust the body width, I might just make the cuffs a little wider as well to make up for it. Perhaps another 3-4 stitches in addition to the 6 you have. Can’t wait to finish the shrug 🙂
