This is my second year in a row designing for the Crochetmous Crew’s make-a-long for the charitable organization, Hat Not Hate. It’s truly a great cause, bringing Knitters and Crocheters together to make blue hats for distribution in schools nation-wide in a show of support to stand up to bullying. This year I chose to design a unisex beginner Tunisian beanie, suitable for all levels of ability, using Lion Brand’s Heartland yarn.

Yarn Details
Lion Brand Heartland is a medium worsted, 100% acrylic yarn, available in multiple heather or tweed colors. I just love the marbled look of the deep blue ‘Olympic’ colorway, paired here with ‘Glacier Bay’, and I have now used it in many makes over the last few years. As a partner to the Hat Not Hate initiative, this is the perfect yarn and color to make hats for donation to the cause!
Intro to Tunisian Crochet
If you’ve never tried Tunisian crochet before, don’t be intimidated! The Glencoe beanie is a completely beginner Tunisian beanie pattern, which means it’s suitable for all levels of crocheters, with a fun and easy technique to achieve the look of the plaid pattern without ever having to change color! The pattern PDF features full explanations of how to set up for Tunisian crochet, photo tutorials, color-coded directions and a color-work chart for each size to make it as easy as possible whatever method of learning you find best!
The pattern is worked in the round, which means you’ll need a double-ended Tunisian hook, or an interchangeable set with a variety of sizes. Check out some of my favourites below, all available on Amazon:

Also sometimes referred to as ‘half double crochet slip stitch.’

Tunisian Knit Stitch 2 Together (TKS2tog): Insert hook under front bar only of next st, then insert hook into following st as if for TKS. Yo and pull through 2 loops on your hook. The st is completed with the standard RetP.
Tunisian Reverse Stitch (TRS): Pulling the working fabric forward slightly so the hook is to the back of your work, insert hook into next st, under the back vertical bar. Keeping hook and yarn to the back, yo and pull up a loop on your hook. The st is completed with the standard RetP.
Bind off in Tunisian Reverse Stitch 2 Together: Insert hook as if for TRS under back vertical bar of each of next 2 sts, yo and complete a sl st through all 3 loops on hook.

Pattern Notes
Ch 1 at the beginning of the Brim rows does not count as a st.
Brim of the hat is worked first, in standard crochet, then joined to form a band. Band is then rotated 90 degrees to work the Body in row ends, in Tunisian crochet.
Body is worked in continuous rounds from the bottom up. Do not join rounds.
Each round in Tunisian crochet consists of 2 passes; the Forward Pass (FwP) and the Return Pass (RetP). The FwP picks up a loop in each st and adds it to your hook, the RetP completes the sts and removes them from your hook. The instructions for each FwP are written in full, however, you will not be able to work all sts at the same time on your double ended or interchangeable hooks.
Pick up as many FwP loops on your hook (and cable) as you are comfortable with before turning and working your RetP to complete the st, always leaving 2-3 loops remaining on your hook to maintain tension.
A standard RetP is worked for every round with color B (yo and pull through 2 loops).
If using interchangeable Tunisian crochet hooks, use the larger hook for the FwP (1 size larger than Brim gauge hook) and the smaller hook for the RetP (or hook size used to meet Brim gauge).
Pattern is written first for size Adult Large, followed by sizes Adult Medium, Teen, Child, and Toddler in parentheses.
For a visual aid, purchase the full pattern PDF for full color charts per size and color-coded directions.
When counting rounds in the Tunisian section, do not include the loops on your hook.
Glencoe Beginner Tunisian Beanie Pattern Directions
With I-9 (5.5 mm) hook and color A
Ch 9 (9, 9, 9, 7) – leave a long enough tail to seam brim closed.
Row 1:
Yo sl st in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.
(8, (8, 8, 8, 6) sts)
Row 2:
Ch 1, yo sl st in the third loop of each st across. (The third loop is the additional horizontal ‘bar’ located just under the top 2 loops of the st on the side facing you.)
Rows 3-100 (-90, -80, -70, -60):
Repeat Row 2, working in third loop for remainder of Brim. Do not fasten off, but leave working loop on hook.
Fold the length of ribbing in half, short ends together. Seam the brim closed using the tail. Turn band inside out to hide the seam, and rotate work 90 degrees so that you are now working into row ends.
Change to J-10 (6 mm) Tunisian hook
Tunisian Setup Round:
Step 1: Forward Pass: Working into the ends of each row, insert your hook in the next row end (the loop already on your hook counts as the first st of your FwP), yo, and pull up a loop.
Step 2: Continue picking up a loop in each row end until your hook or cord is comfortably full.
Step 3: Return Pass: Turn your work to WS, slide your sts along and add color B to the opposite end of your hook for the RetP.
Step 4: Pull color B through the first loop of color A.
Step 5: Continuing with color B, yo, pull through 2 loops (1 of color B and 1 of color A). Continue to yo and pull through 2 loops, working sts off your hook, until 2-3 loops remain.
Turn your work back to RS facing and continue alternately picking up loops in the FwP and working them off in the RetP (yo, pull through 2 loops) in sections until you have picked up a loop in every row end around.
(100, (90, 80, 70, 60) sts)
Do not join, but begin working straight into first st.
Round 1:
1 TRS in each st around. With color B, RetP all sts.
Place stitch marker in first st to mark the start of the round, and move up each round. Hereafter it is assumed a standard RetP is completed for every round.
(100, (90, 80, 70, 60) sts)
Round 2:

(70 (60, -, -, -) sts)
Bind Off:
On final round before binding off, RetP all sts until 1 st remains. Slide sts to forward end of hook, pull color A loop through color B, (as if completing a sl st), leaving just the 1 loop of color A on your hook. Cut color B yarn, leaving a long tail.
Round 31 (31, 28, 25, 22):
Continuing with color A, bind off in TRS working 2 sts at a time. See special stitches for details For Teen and Toddler sizes with an uneven number of sts in the last round, bind off the 1 remaining st by itself.
(35, (30, 28, 25, 23) sts)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail of color A. Weave both tails in and out of the last round of sts, then pull to cinch the top closed. Weave tails back and forth a few times to secure, weave in all ends.
