The Yarn
Inspiration can come from anywhere, and when I received this Wonderfluff yarn colorway titled ‘Beehive Heather’, I knew exactly what it needed to be! I love anything with a honeycomb pattern and I’ve been thinking for a while of creating another simple Tunisian Crochet pattern worked in the round – so this seemed the ideal pairing! Provided for this design by We Crochet, Wonderfluff is a Bulky #5 weight yarn, made from 70% baby Alpaca, 23% Nylon, and 7% Merino Wool. It’s available to buy in 50g ‘donut’ skeins of 142 yards, and you’ll need 2 balls for this design; one color for the Forward Pass, and a high contrast color for the Return Pass.
Tunisian Crochet Interchangeable Hooks
To work Tunisian Crochet in the round, you’ll need a double-ended hook. Honestly, these can be a little hard to come by sometimes, particularly in larger sizes or in a variety of styles. You may even stumble on some double-ended hooks that have a different hook size at either end – careful with these, they are actually a knitting tool for fixing dropped stitches, and not the correct hooks you’re looking for to work this kind of project.
Because of the difficulty in finding the correct style and size of hook, my personal recommendation is a set of Tunisian interchangeable hooks. You can find these in a few styles and materials, and I’ve linked a few at different price points below.
My first set was the Clover Takumi Bamboo Interchangeable set and while these are great to work with, they unfortunately don’t come in many larger sizes.
When working Tunisian Crochet it’s often recommended to use a hook a size or two larger than the yarn calls for, so I often ran into difficulty. I ended up purchasing some individual Tunisian hooks from Knitter’s Pride and cobbling the cables together with some of the Clover ones to create a sort of DIY interchangeable set. Although it worked for a time, I FINALLY got my hands on a new set for Christmas.
The Knitter’s Pride Ginger Tunisian Crochet Interchangeable Hook set. This is the Holy Grail of sets, as it seemingly comes with everything you need AND the kitchen sink! The only drawback? The cords don’t swivel (unlike my Clover Takumi set). I don’t THINK this is going to be a game-changer, but I’ll keep you updated with how I get on with them!

Winnie Tunisian Crochet Cowl Pattern Notes:
Cowl is worked from the bottom up, using the Tunisian in the round technique. Begin with your forward pass color to make your foundation chain, join your return pass color, and then begin working in continuous rounds.
Tunisian crochet consists of two ‘passes’; the forward pass and the return pass. The forward pass picks up loops on to your hook, while the return pass completes the stitch, working it off the hook.
In Tunisian crochet the first loop on your hook counts as the first stitch, so no turning chains are needed to begin.
Instructions between brackets [ ] are worked the total number of times indicated. Instructions between asterisks *…* are repeated continuously around.
Tunisian Crochet in the Round Notes:
The instructions for each forward pass round are written in full, however you will not be able to work all stitches at the same time on your double-ended or interchangeable hooks. Pick up as many forward pass loops on your hook as you are comfortable with on the right side, before turning to the wrong side and working your return pass to complete the stitches, always leaving 2-3 loops remaining on your hook to maintain tension.
The forward pass and return pass in the round each require their own ball of yarn in this pattern.
If using interchangeable Tunisian crochet hooks of different sizes, use the US M-13 (9 mm) hook for the forward pass (or size used to meet gauge) and the US L-11 (8 mm) hook for the return pass (or one size smaller than gauge hook).
For visual reference of when to change stitches, you may find the color chart available in the pattern PDF to be particularly helpful.
